Day 35: Wandallah to Burra

Friday 4th July 2014

If ever you want to show someone what a day on the Heysen Trail with an End-to End group looks like, this is a good day to view.  (And for the best effect, click on any of the photos to view them full screen)

The walk was 16.4 km over the roller coaster hills from Wandallah to Burra.  It was a great way to finish a week away with the End to End -1 group and we also completed the final leg of Le Tour de Burra.  John Pratt also finished the trail and was awarded his certificate at Burra.

The usual morning briefing about the day ahead was held at Burra, before getting on the bus to Wandallah.

The Morris Minus award, complete with his own kit bag, went to Coral Campbell for her hilarious weather checks.  Coral had noticed that her Google weather forecasts had not come close to the reality all week.  She mentioned this to Dean Mortimer who pointed out the reason for this discrepancy was that her Google search was for Burra NSW, not our location in Burra SA.

Dean's flag - Stage 4 - was factually correct but out of order due to the changes forced on us earlier in the week.  This was the fifth and final leg of Le Tour de Burra.

After getting off the bus at Wandallah, no-one was surprised to find out it was cold and windy.  Then we set out to walk the many significant undulations to Burra.

Into the mist.

Regrouping at a stile.

Rolling hills shrouded in mist.

Arriving at this redundant stile, the call went back down the line for the last person to shut the gate.

That last person turned out to be Steve Clift who realised he was had, but happily posed for this photo anyway.

Hills, hills and more hills.

Morning tea was on the sheltered side of a hill.

After morning tea, it was round the corner and into the cold, driving wind and fog.

Somehow this lucky giant earthworm survived unharmed after our group walked over it.

Our first view of Burra in the distance.

The next two photos were taken only metres apart, but look at the amazing difference in the light over a very short period of time.

We had lunch just outside Burra at the Redruth Gaol.  We sheltered from the wind behind the wall, but the rain set in just as Dean began the presentations for Le Tour de Burra.

The official results of Le Tour de Burra, as determined by Dean, are as follows:
