Day 34: Dares Hill Summit Road to Newikie Creek

Thursday 3rd July 2014

Wet weather had forced several changes to our Burra program.

However, it seemed the roads were now dry enough for the bus to take us to the more remote starting points of the walks, so we went back to complete the sections we missed.

It turned out the roads were not quite dry enough and our bus got bogged.  Luckily, Jan & Barry were on hand to tow the bus out.

Dean Mortimer's flag - Stage 2 - is actually our 5th day of walking and reflects the disruption to our schedule.

Morris Minus was awarded to Margaret Schmidke for her meritorious sewing - shirts, badges and the costume for Morris Minus.  Brilliant work, Margaret.

It was still early in the day when we reached Caroona Creek Conservation Park and we continued through picturesque Tourilie Gorge, crossing and re-crossing the mainly dry creek bed creek many times.

We saw several remnants of stone retaining walls built for an old bullock track.

Some of the sections in Tourilie Gorge are very pretty after the rain.

Wrong way Michael.

Morning tea was in the creek bed, adjacent to the hand-carved gap in the rocks.

This gap was carved out of the rock and is just wide enough for a cart to get through.  From this side, it looks tough going to get a cart up and through there.

From this side it looks impossible!

A message from Jan & Barry.

Seeing Jan & Barry's vehicle, a smiling Dean Mortimer exits Tourilie Gorge………..

…….and we returned the favour by leaving a message for Jan & Barry.

Lunch was at the Caroona Creek Shelter…...

…….. where we also caught up with Jan & Barry.  We also had a surprise visit from Hugh Greenhill of the Burra Branch of FOHT.

After lunch it was more walking along a dry creek bed.

When we reached Newikie Creek, we found it had some water in it and was just delightful.

Late in the afternoon, we came to the top of a hill that had a rocky outcrop above the trail, and several of our group went up for a look.

I also went for a look and took these shots of our group below.

The weather was fine and sunny all day.  We walked a total of 27 km and finished quite late in the day.
