Day 31: Burra to World's End, Burra Gorge

Sunday 29th June 2014

It is Day 2 of "Le Tour de Burra" and the wet weather has forced a change of plan.  The rain has made the roads too boggy for the bus to get to some of the drop zones, so today we abandon the bus and walk out of Burra.

Stage 5 of Le Tour is to be completed today - Burra to World's End campground, Burra Gorge.

The group gathers on a very cold morning at Burra.

The winners of Stage 1 of Le Tour show off their respective pennants.

Coral Campbell (Sprint); Margaret Schmidtke (Stage win); Jane Haar (King of the Mountain)

The morning briefing and Dean's flag for Stage 5 of Le Tour being contested today.

I was awarded Morris Minus, now with Le Tour pennants.  I had hilariously (to some) dropped part of my lunch in the dung as we sheltered below My Bryan yesterday.

Much of today's walk was on dirt road, and there were only a few scenic highlights.

Looking back to Burra.

Lunch at the side of the road.

One of the highlights of the day was the recurring rainbow.  My photo is below, but Mary Cartland took the shot of the day of the rainbow, so I will try to get her photo and add it to the blog.
This happened over Dutton's Trough Road.  The Friends Greening Committee has been active in this area, but more trees are needed, so Neil & Ann Nosworthy have arranged a tree planting on this same stretch of the road on our rest day.

Our support vehicle was provided by Barry & Jan Matthew.  They were always a welcome sight when they appeared from time to time during the days at Burra.

This is how a typical draw for Le Tour de Burra stages went down.  Each walker drew a token from my beanie, Dean Mortimer recorded the number drawn against that walker's name, and Neville Haar collected the tokens and acted as scrutineer.  At the end of each day, Dean added up each walker's score over the various stages and announced the winners.

The end of today's walk was at World's End.  We walked 25.5 km today.

Not only did Dean collate the scores for each Stage of Le Tour de Burra, but he gave out the prizes for the Stage win, Sprint section, and King of the Mountain.  Note how the winners are mostly the ladies in the group and how quick Dean is to throw in kisses and hugs to all winners, except Michael Brennan.  Is Dean just lucky, or is the fix in?  More on that tomorrow.
